As the weather warms up, families are likely to be on the hunt for a getaway spot.

Those who are keen to keep expenses low this year, might have camping on their radar. If you already have all the necessary equipment but are unsure of where to set up camp - Shell Island in North Wales is a favourite among families.

The Gwynedd site spans 450 acres, with 300 allocated for camping, making it one of the largest campsites in the UK, boasting 800 pitches. Its unique location on the North Cardigan Bay, within the Snowdonia National Park, draws families from far and wide.

While some visitors come for day trips - with activities such as fishing, crabbing, and boating on offer - many choose to holiday here, particularly during the summer months. It can get quite busy, so online booking in advance is recommended.

Pitches aren't pre-assigned, allowing you to explore and set up camp wherever you fancy. There are various camping areas to choose from, whether you prefer being next to the beach, nestled among the trees, or closer to the facilities, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Most amenities are conveniently located in the centre of the island, behind the leisure complex. Camping is the most affordable option, with peak prices (July to September) at £12 per night for adults and £6.25 per night for children aged three to 15.

During busier periods like bank holidays, a minimum stay of two or three nights may apply. Fancy a break but not quite up for camping? No worries, as this beachside location offers comfortable chalets and flats which can accommodate groups of up to six.

Those who've already checked it out have largely sung its praises. A guest from earlier this year shared on Facebook: "Thank you, we have had a fantastic first camping weekend of the year. Easter has been great fun. Lovely to be back on the island and the new snack bar is looking fantastic."

Another fan added: "When the weather's good this place is unreal, you could be abroad with Snowdonia overlooking the sea. Always a favourite to return to."

Scoring an impressive 4 out of 5 stars on Tripadvisor, one reviewer said: "Stayed in Shell Island for the first time this weekend, and I've got to say I can't believe I had never been to this little hidden gem before! Beautiful and breathtaking views, plenty of space for everyone to pitch up without being cramped, such good value for money, absolutely everything on site that you could possibly ask for or need."

Aside from the beach, there are sand dunes to explore, a harbour, an in-house restaurant, snack bar and even the Tavern Bar boasting a neat outside area adjacent to the kids' playground - allowing for relaxed supervision. As the name suggests, Shell Island is abundant with shells - approximately 200 varied types can be found washed ashore. The best shell-spotting months fall between January and June.

Dog-lovers, good news - dogs are permitted at Shell Island, they just aren't allowed in food areas like the snack bar or the bar zone. The toilet facilities include a spacious family unit, baby baths and changing units, and the showers come with a changing area and a seat.

The women's showers feature a large make-up/hair room with separate mirrors and plugs, and both the ladies' and men's showers have two complimentary hairdryers. The Children's Play Park is located outside the bar and snack bar area, which is adjacent to a Games Room equipped with pool tables and other activities for children.

While caravans are not permitted on the site, motorhomes and campervans are welcome. The closest train station is Llanbedr, a 30-minute walk away. For more information or to book, visit the Shell Island website, or learn more on their Facebook page here.
