Sublime's Jakob Nowell Honors Late Father Bradley Before Debuting Band's First Single in 28 Years on 'Tonight Show'

"I love you Dad," the musician said ahead of the performance. "It should be you here right now"

Sublime debuted "Feel Like That" on TV.

On Monday July 8, the alt-rock band performed their new single — the band's first new music in 28 years — on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Before performing the track, Jakob Nowell — the son of Sublime's late frontman Bradley Nowell, who died in 1996 of a heroin overdose — who joined the band in 2023 hopped on the mic to share a sweet message about his father.

"I love you Dad," the musician, 29, said. "It should be you here right now."

Jakob then delivered a groove-filled performance of the track while shirtless and wearing red board shorts. Midway through the songs, he then launched into a rap over the ska-reggae number: "This is a dance done from north to south / This is a dance done from north to south / East, West, / Panama, and Jamaica, uh / Every but- wan move your feet, ah / Love my girly, love my dog / And love my God, I feel gon' stand-stand for / I'm unreal / When I'm on the microphone it get real."

In late May, Sublime released "Feel Like That," which also features vocals from Scott Woodruff of Stick Figure, as well as the band's founding members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh.

Not only was the single the band's first release since their viral Coachella set with Jakob at the helm, but it also was released just one day prior to the 28th anniversary of Bradley's death.

“This song came about in an organic way. My uncles and I always want to collab with artists in different modern music scenes," the Jakobs Castle artist said in a press release. "But hearing my own voice on a track side by side with my dad's voice really feels like the classic Sublime sound stepping into the modern era."

Jakob added: "SoCal music is my family’s pride and joy and our family is getting bigger every day. 'Feel Like That' captures this new sentiment and we want it to be the first of many. Who wants to join the family next?"

In an interview with PEOPLE in April, the SoCal singer opened up about joining Sublime ahead of his Coachella debut.

“There's been people asking me to join the band since I was 12, and it was something I never wanted to do,” Jakob said. “I’d always told myself I’d never do the Sublime thing.”

Ultimately he found "a lot of closure" in stepping into the role.

"The story feels complete," Jakob said.
