Succession season 4's finale happened to be the hit show's most-watched episode.

Bringing to a close five years of high-stakes business, sibling rivalries and hilariously random putdowns, this farewell instalment of Succession was a landmark moment in more ways than one for the HBO comedy-drama, bringing in 2.9 million viewers last weekend, according to Warner Bros. Discover (via Variety).

That's a 5% improvement on its prior record of 2.75m, while it's also been confirmed that season 4 itself continuously brought in Succession's highest ratings of 8.7m on average.

Meanwhile, Logan Roy actor Brian Cox celebrated the end of Succession with an emotional post on Instagram Stories.

"We have now come to the end," he wrote. "And what has been, in my career, certainly the greatest work experience ever. The harmony between crew and cast was truly amazing.

"It was on its way to become a great series, but the love and commitment from crew to cast and writers made it memorable. I would like to thank all of us in the making and creating of this show from the very bottom of my heart."

Peter Friedman, who played Waystar RoyCo's vice-chairman Frank Vernon, was particularly fond of the way he'd get blasted by insults on set from Cox as he got into character.

"He's frightening when he gets up into high dudgeon," he told The Guardian. "I don't mean just acting frightening, I mean actually frightening. He can get there! But he's also the nicest guy in the world."

"As Frank, I'm offended sometimes, but as Peter, it's fun. Certain bits aren't scripted. After some two-line spat, Kieran [Culkin] will throw a champagne cork at me. I'm like: 'Ow, f**k, that's not in any script.' But it's perfect."

Succession season 4 airs on HBO in the US, and Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
