Former prime minister David Cameron has been named foreign secretary in a Cabinet reshuffle that has also seen James Cleverly appointed home secretary.

The reshuffle came after Suella Braverman was sacked as home secretary over her controversial comments ahead of planned pro-Palestine protests around Armistice weekend.

Speaking after news of her ouster broke, Braverman said: "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary.

"I will have more to say in due course."

Braverman was accused of inflaming tensions in the run up to violence from English Defence League (EDL) supporters over the weekend following an article in which she accused police of favouritism towards Palestine marchers, prompting calls for the prime minister to sack her.

Her comments were widely criticised - both by opposition MPs and members of her own party, with one senior Tory saying the home secretary had "lost it".

Downing Street later said they had not signed off on the final version of Braverman's article before it was printed.
