Suffolk pubs group looks to expand its wine business by acquiring merchant

A fast-growing pub group has snapped up an independent wine merchant for an undisclosed sum.

Hospitality business Chestnut Group - which owns 18 pubs mainly in Suffolk and Norfolk but also across the wider region - has bought Bijou Wine Merchant as it strengthens its wine business.

The Bijou team - based at Hoveton in Norfolk - has more than 50 years' wine trade experience.

Chestnut said the acquisition was "a significant step" in its ongoing regional growth strategy.

Chestnut founder and chief executive Philip Turner said over the last year, the business had been building on the acquisition of Peter Graham Wines - which is set to lead to the launch of The Bottle Shop in a few of its properties and an online offering in 2024.

“This acquisition represents the coming together of two fantastic Norfolk heritage brands, both of which have built up a solid reputation, placing us in the enviable position of being able to cater for much of East Anglia’s independent wine demand," he said.

"We are committed to building on that success and providing a platform for further growth as one team under the Peter Graham Wines wholesale brand.”

He added: "We look forward to working with the team at Bijou and learning from their experience in this sector.”

Bijou Wine Merchant chairman Gordon Hall will be staying on to provide continuity.
