Children are being encouraged to pick up a book to spark their imaginations this summer.

The 2024 Summer Reading Challenge ‘Marvellous Makers’ is taking place at Oxfordshire County Council’s libraries from July 6.

Co-organised with The Reading Agency and Create, a charity that delivers the creative arts to disadvantaged people, it will encourage children to tell stories through reading.

From July 6 until September 7, youngsters aged four to 11 can take part to discover new stories and enjoy activities including junk modelling, music, dance, drawing and painting.

A mini challenge with a card and stickers will also be available for children under four.

Mark McCree, service manager, libraries and heritage at Oxfordshire County Council, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual opportunity for children to ignite and develop their love of reading, with the added bonus of being able to win some great prizes and take part in a whole range of activities at their local library.

"Reading, as well as being a fun hobby, sparks imagination and ideas.

“We welcome and encourage children across the county to visit the library and enjoy some great books over the summer. There are plenty of creative events to take part in too, and it’s all free."

This year’s bespoke illustrations are created by Natelle Quek, illustrator of titles including Wild Wild Wood and I Am Nefertiti.
