What’s ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’s’ trending ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ dance all about?

Gen Z TikTokers have found their new favorite dance trend, and it’s all thanks to The Summer I Turned Pretty.

In the second season’s sixth episode, titled “Love Fest,” which aired on Amazon Prime on Aug. 4, fans of the Jenny Han-adapted series saw characters Steven and Taylor, played by Sean Kaufman and Rain Spencer, perform a choreographed dance number to Miley Cyrus‘s “Party in the U.S.A."

In the aforementioned scene, Steven cues up Cyrus’s 2009 summer anthem before beckoning Taylor to the dance floor. Turns out the older Conklin sibling remembered the dance number that Taylor and Belly created to the track when they were kids.

On Aug. 7, Han posted a behind-the-scenes video of Kaufman and Spencer practicing the sequence, which was choreographed by Kevin Lee-Y Green, prior to filming.

Since the episode aired, fans of the show have learned the choreography and are sharing their re-creations of the sequence on TikTok.

While there’s been some controversy in the Summer I Turned Pretty fandom, the now viral choreographed dance appears to be a lighthearted TikTok trend that many fans are partaking in.

“I grew up loving that song,” Spencer told People of Cyrus’s viral track. “My mom and I would blast that song in the car. We still do. It’s like the best song for that moment. It reminded me of being a kid and dressing up and putting on a fashion show for the parents and creating a dance.

“It’s something you always remember and it’s something that really bonds you with someone else,” the actress added. “We had a few rehearsals to learn the dance. It was just wholesome content.”

Dana Lee (@danalee805) posted her rendition of the dance with her boyfriend on Aug. 7.

“The Steven to my Taylor,” she captioned the video, which has more than 1.4 million views and 222,200 likes as of reporting.

‘How does it feel LIVING MY DREAM’

Several fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty have taken to Lee’s comments to both commend the accuracy of their re-creation and gush over how sweet it is that her boyfriend willingly participated.

“I love that he’s genuinely enjoying it,” @mikayla.m.cole wrote.

“This how Conrad would look doing the dance tbh,” @mochaalicious joked.

“How does it feel LIVING MY DREAM,” @mckennajl12 replied.

And while “Party in the U.S.A.” remains a favorite of many, the track had been enjoying a commercial renaissance even prior to its nod in The Summer I Turned Pretty.

On July 12, Billboard reported that Cyrus’s 2009 single reemerged on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time since its original chart run in 2009-10, likely thanks to this year’s Fourth of July festivities.

The song, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 back in August 2009, reentered at No. 50 last month, “with 8 million U.S. streams (up 64%), 5.2 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 34%) and 6,000 downloads sold (up 560%) in the June 30-July 6 tracking week, according to Luminate.”

“HOW DID YALL ALREADY LEARN THIS IT CAME OUT FRIDAY,” @meer.uh asked.
