Sunderland Central is a rare constituency that remains unchanged since 2019, despite boundary alterations in most other parts of the region.

The retirement of Labour MP Julie Elliott was announced just after the General Election was called, and the party has selected North East NHS manager Lewis Atkinson as its candidate.

He will face Millfield councillor Niall Hodson for the Lib Dems and Gregory Peacock - also a councillor in the city - for the Conservatives. Chris Eynon will run for Reform, which performed well in Sunderland in the recent North East mayoral election.
