Sunderland face a battle to hold on to their top stars and goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is one of those being targeted. According to reports in The Sun, the talented 24-year-old is being eyed by Sheffield United following their relegation from the Premier League.

Without a permanent head coach, Sunderland risk not being able to keep hold of players they might otherwise have been able to do, if they had stability.

Patterson has been an ever present in the Championship having risen through the academy ranks at the Stadium of Light. Nobody has been able to displace him between the posts in the last two years at Sunderland since he broke into the first team in 2021 following regular appearances at different age groups throughout his youth career.

The England U21 international signed a deal which takes him to June 2028 so he will command a huge fee should he leave Wearside and Sheffield United are understood to be prepared to spend in the region of £8m for the shot-stopper.

Patterson is one of Sunderland’s prize assets but Sunderland will want to keep hold of him. Losing him to league rivals such as Sheffield United would be a blow ahead of the next campaign, especially as both teams will want to be competing at the top end of the table.

It depends whether Black Cats’ owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus wants to cash in now but the club are under no immediate pressure to do so and the player himself might want to stay given his long association with the club. Born in North Shields, there is a strong affiliation to the area and the club that gave him his chance and having signed his contract extension as recently as 2022, he may not be ready to leave just yet.

He made his debut in 2020 in an EFL Trophy clash against Fleetwood Town before going on loan to Notts County in the National League. So far Patterson has made 123 appearances for Sunderland in all competitions and helped them win promotion from League One two years ago and then the Championship play-offs last year. The installation of a new head coach soon might be the key to him committing his future to Sunderland.
