3,300-Year-Old Sunken Ship Found in Mediterranean

The wreck of a ship from the 13th or 14th century BC has been discovered off the coast of Israel, national authorities said on Thursday, June 20.

Images released by the Israel Antiquities Authority show some of the hundreds of jugs found at the site, over a mile beneath the surface of the sea, and around 55 miles (90 km) from shore. The authority said the jugs likely would have contained goods like oil, wine, or fruit.

A full assessment of the cargo was being carried out, the authority said.

Yaakov Sharavit, director of the Unit of Marine Archaeology at the antiquities authority, said the discovery of a trading ship so far from the shore would change our understanding of sailing in the ancient world. Credit: Israel Antiquities Authority via Storyful
