Morgan Spurlock, the star of the legendary documentary Super Size Me, has died aged 53.

In 2004, Spurlock starred in the documentary, in which he aimed to show the harm of fast food by consuming only McDonald’s for 30 days.

In a statement, Spurlock’s family said he “passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on May 23, 2024, in New York from complications of cancer.”

His brother Craig Spurlock added: “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan. Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Super Size Me became one of the most commercially successful documentaries of all time and saw him nominated for an Oscar.

He also won Best Documentary Screenplay from the Writers Guild of America for the film.

Spurlock also directed Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden? which explored the hunt to find the terrorist before he was killed in 2011. He was also behind the camera for One Direction: This Is Us, which followed the band around the world at the peak of their popularity.
