DC Comics has announced that Superman will be getting his red underwear back for Action Comics #1000.

Although the superhero has been through many looks over the years, his iconic red trunks will finally return for this very special issue.

Back in 2011, DC Comics redesigned Superman's look with the New 52 launch.

We basically saw his classic red trunks all-but-gone and this was reflected in the movies and TV shows featuring Superman that we've seen since.

Released in print and digitally on April 18, Action Comics #1000 will see the DC debut of Brian Michael Bendis, who writes a 10-page Superman story with art by Jim Lee.

And the comic finds Superman back in his red underwear, and Jim explained why those special pants are back.

"Action Comics #1000 represents a watershed moment in the history of not just comic books, but entertainment, literature, and pop culture," he said.

"There's no better way to celebrate Superman's enduring popularity than to give him a look that combines some new accents with the most iconic feature of his classic design."

And that's not all. The comic will also feature two 15-page stories from Superman writer Peter J Tomasi and artist Pat Gleason, as well as Action Comics writer/artist Dan Jurgens.

Other contributors to the issue include original Superman movie director Richard Donner, as well as Geoff Johns, Brad Meltzer, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, Tom King, Scott Snyder and others.

Superman's rebooted red-pants outfit comes after we found out his black costume was cut from the Justice League movie after being hinted at in promotional images for the film.
