The former Sainsbury's store in Leicester’s Humberstone Gate could be brought back into use. The shop building has stood empty since the supermarket giant closed its city centre store in September 2022.

Now, a planning application has been submitted to Leicester City Council for the vacant building which could see it split in two, with new shops moving in. Limited detail has been given by applicant Mr Fiyak as to the possible new tenants.

However, planning documents suggest one of the businesses could be a supermarket and the other a takeaway. Mr Fiyak has requested permission from the city council to make alterations to the front of the buildings, creating access to the office space above the old store and to divide the building.

New accesses to the main part of the building, likely to be a supermarket, would also be created at the front and back of the premises. Part of the back of the building would also be demolished to create car parking spaces and to create room for extraction flues, the plan shows.

A public consultation on the plan will run until Tuesday, June 4. Leicester City Council has set a target date of Tuesday, June 11, to rule on the scheme.
