Supreme Court’s Last Opinion Day Will Be Monday, Roberts Says

(Bloomberg) -- The Supreme Court’s last opinion day will be Monday, July 1, said Chief Justice John Roberts on Friday, teeing up a dramatic finale to an unusually long Supreme Court term.

The scheduling announcement means the court, which still has several cases to resolve, on Monday will announce its highly-anticipated decision on former president Donald Trump’s bid to avoid federal prosecution for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The court is also set to announce a pair of decisions about social media misinformation.

The court on Friday threw out a decades-old legal doctrine that empowered federal regulators to interpret unclear laws, a move hailed as a victory by business groups. It also allowed upheld a ban on sleeping outdoors in a case about homelessness.

The court left some of its most closely-watched decisions for its final week. This week alone, the court tossed out Purdue Pharma LP’s $6 billion opioid settlement, curbed the Securities and Exchange Commission’s ability to press complaints before in-house judges and confirmed it will temporarily let abortions take place in medical emergencies in Idaho.
