Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie return in new Vigil series set in the air

The new series of the crime drama will be set within the Royal Air Force, co-starring Romola Garai and Dougray Scott.

Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie will return in a new series of Vigil - this time set in the air.

The Gentleman Jack star and Game Of Thrones actor play lovers and police officers in the BBC crime drama, which will see them joined by Hollywood stars Romola Garai and Dougray Scott as they investigate the Royal Air Force.

Jones said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Vigil team again and continuing our story. We have brilliant new scripts and some amazing additions to the cast. Buckle up. It’s quite a ride.”

Leslie added: “I’m delighted to team up with Suranne again and continue Amy and Kirsten’s adventures through a second series of Vigil. Tom Edge has created another gripping case for us to grapple with in a whole new setting.”

The first series of Vigil - set under the sea on board an submarine - was the BBC's most-watched drama in three years, attracting an audience of 13.4 million viewers in 2021.

Jones stars as Amy Silva, a police officer called in to investigate unexplained deaths in the military.

The new series of the six-part Sunday night drama sees Silva and her partner Longacre [Leslie] investigating multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish air force facility.

Atonement star Garai said: “It’s a huge privilege to be welcomed in as a part of Vigil series two and to be playing such a layered, complex character. I can only hope to do justice to the shows continued fascinating, challenging and thrilling storytelling.”

Mission: Impossible 2 star Scott added: “I’m delighted to be joining the cast of Vigil series two - the first was so highly regarded and widely watched, and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with Tom Edge and Andy De Emmony. Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie are great talents and I’m excited to be working with them.”

The new series will also see His Dark Materials' Gary Lewis return as DSU Robertson and the introduction of SAS Rogue Heroes' Amir El-Masry, Bulletproof's David Elliot , Sex Education's Chris Jenks, The Midwoch Cuckoos' Tommy Sim’aan, House of the Dragon's Oscar Salem and Noughts + Crosses' Jonathan Ajayi to the cast.

Vigil series two will also star Hiba Medina in her first major TV role.

Creator and writer Tom Edge said: “I’m delighted that Suranne and Rose are returning to reprise their roles as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre, and am grateful to the BBC for the opportunity to take them on a thrilling new adventure. World Productions have built a fantastic reputation for twisting, turning thrillers and this one corkscrews with the best of them.”
