A suspected drunk driver smashed into an arrow sign after ignoring a 'big red X' showing a lane closure, police said.

The driver of the grey Volkswagen Polo plunged into the hazard marker showing where drivers should merge after they failed to spot a large arrow directing them out of the lane. Shocking pictures show the bonnet of the car crushed following the collision.

They subsequently tested positive for alcohol and were arrested. Thankfully nobody was injured in the incident.
