At around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, officials said that a Smith County deputy pulled over a vehicle near Van Highway and Loop 323 for a traffic violation. The deputy contacted the driver and reportedly smelled marijuana in the vehicle.
Officials said the deputy then did a probable cause search of the vehicle and found a 6-month-old girl in a car seat. The deputy then asked the child’s mother, who was in the passenger seat, to change the baby’s diaper, according to Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy then reportedly saw a “bottle of pressed fentanyl” that was being held inside the baby’s diaper.
“That could have been a bad, disastrous situation,” said Smith County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Larry Christian.
The baby’s parents, Dre-Darian Taerondrick Ester, 27 of Tyler, and Jada La Nae Speight, 22 of Tyler, were both arrested for the following charges:
Manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance between four and 200 grams.
Possession of marijuana between four ounces and five pounds.
Abandonment/endangerment of a child in imminent danger.
Human remains found off FM 346 East in Smith County
Both Ester and Speight are being held in the Smith County Jail on $105,000 bonds. The deputy contacted Child Protect Services to take custody of the child.
