Sutton moped rider dies in crash with Met Police car

A moped rider died after a crash with a marked police car in Sutton yesterday (Monday, June 17). At around 4.45pm, the police car and a moped crashed in Wrythe Lane, at the junction with Erskine Road.

The London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance were both dispatched to the scene, but the rider of the motorbike, a man, died at the scene. Two police officers were rushed to hospital and were treated for minor injuries.

The Metropolitan Police says the moped was not being pursued by officers. The police car did not have blue lights and sirens on.

The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed about this incident, and a referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Enquiries into the incident are also ongoing, and the road remains closed while police carry out their investigation. Officers are also trying to identify and inform the moped rider's next of kin of his death.

The full statement from the Metropolitan Police says: "At approximately 16:45hrs on Monday, 17 June a marked police car was in collision with a moped in Wrythe Lane, junction with Erskine Road, Sutton. London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

"Despite their best efforts, a male, the rider of the moped, died at the scene. Work is ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.

"Two police officers from the police car were taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries. The moped was not being pursued by the police car at the time of the collision - blue lights and sirens were not in operation.

"Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing. Road closures remain in place at the location.

"As is routine in such circumstances, the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed. A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."
