Fourteen Sutton schools are due to be used as polling stations on July 4, with seven closing to children on the day. The council has said that the 'very limited time' available following the announcement of the election meant the process of choosing polling stations was made more complicated.

Sutton Council told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): "Once the (polling) location has been agreed with the council, it is down to the schools to decide whether they wish to close or not. The process has been made more complicated this year with the timing of the General Election and the snap announcement that it had been called."

The council had only recently had to organise polling stations for the London Mayoral and assembly elections in May. There was also a local by-election in the St Helier West ward, which saw the Conservatives win a council seat from Labour.

These same polling stations will see action again when Sutton residents vote in the General Election on July 4. The borough's two electoral constituencies are currently both held by the Conservatives.

However, Paul Scully's announcement that he will be standing down from his Sutton and Cheam seat could perhaps play a part in a swing to either Labour or the Lib Dems. Similarly in neighbouring Carshalton and Wallington, there is talk of another potential three-horse race between incumbent MP Elliot Coburn and his Labour and Lib Dem challengers.
