Surrey is home to a number of neighbourhoods that test us when it comes to our spelling and pronunciation. One place many of us struggle with is the lovely village of Pyrford.

Sandwiched between West Byfleet, Wisley and Ripley, it's located on the outskirts of Woking. But the village of Pyrford is pronounced Purr-ford.

It is a popular spot for commuters. Woking railway station offers a super quick train service into the capital, taking a mere 24 minutes to reach London Waterloo.

For motorists, Pyford is also less than 10 minutes' drive to the A3 which has direct links to Guildford, London, plus the M25. Located on the banks of the River Wey, the village offers pretty waterside walks, but also further routes to stretch your legs including a stroll along the Wey Canal with a view of the locks, bridges and colourful canal boats.

The Anchor is a country pub and restaurant situated at the Pyrford Lock overlooking the water and is popular with ramblers. Many stop off here while following the River Wey, and grab a refreshment.

Pyrford, famously mentioned in H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds as the landing site for the third Martian invasion cylinder. However, the reality is that the village is a far cry from the chilling sci-fi novel and is actually a charming village that houses a historic church built in 1140 AD, and sits on the edge of Newark Priory, a historical crumbling landmark in Ripley.

The Priory is a former Norman monastery, which was a huge abbey and place of worship. It's located on an island on the River Wey, and was set upon under King Henry VIII's tirade.

It's now on private land and is not open to viewings, the priory is located on farmland. From walking along the river it can be viewed, making a gorgeous backdrop.

Pyrford and the surrounding area is a golfer's paradise, with Hoebridge Golf Centre, The Wisley Golf Club and Pyrford Golf Course all within easy reach. Pyrford Golf Course boasts stunning surroundings and an exhilarating experience, set in 23 acres and surrounded by beautiful lakes.
