Sydney Sweeney said she flew her grandmas to Italy for her nun horror movie, "Immaculate."
The new film sees the "Euphoria" and "Madame Web" star play Cecilia, a young woman who had a near-death experience as a child and devoted herself to God. After moving to an Italian convent, she's horrified by what she finds there.
On Wednesday's "Today Show," Sweeney said that she recruited her grandmothers to appear as extras in the horror movie.
"I flew them to Italy and they got to come visit me on set," she recalled. "I made them extras as nuns and then I brought them to the premiere in LA and they were just so excited."
In February, Sweeney told "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" that her grandmother had always wanted to visit Italy.
"They'd never been to Europe. My Grandy's dream was to go to Italy, she's never left the country before so I surprised them," she said.
Here's what else you need to know about Sweeney's family.
Lisa Sweeney worked five jobs to put herself through school but left her legal career after having children
Sweeney told Variety in August 2023 that her mother, Lisa Sweeney, worked five jobs to put herself through school to become a criminal defense attorney when she was younger.
"My mom grew up with barely anything. She got her GED when she was 16; she worked five jobs to put herself through school; she took care of her brothers; she takes care of everyone," the actor explained. "It's unbelievable seeing where she came from, and being able to show her this world now."
Sweeney added: "She could not come home to two little babies and be mentally OK. So she had to quit."
Steven Sweeney works in hospitality
The actor's father, Steven Sweeney, works in hospitality. She told Variety that a mixup on Wikipedia led to many people believing that he was a doctor.
"I wish he was a doctor — life would have been a little different!" she joked. "I have tried emailing, and they won't change it. Like, it's the real me!"
Sweeney said: "He lives on a ranch in Mexico, and doesn't have internet or cell service. I know he's proud of me, and I know he's like, 'Wow, this is a crazy world!'"
Sydney has a younger brother, Trent Sweeney, who's in the US Air Force
Sydney also has a younger brother, Trent Sweeney, who has had a few minor acting roles.
Per IMDb, he worked with his sister on "ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction" back in 2009, and in February, Jimmy Fallon showed off a clip from the B-movie.
In August 2020, he confirmed on Instagram he had completed military basic training and that he is a member of the United States Air Force.
Trent also has a Twitch page, where he occasionally streams video games.
The family moved to Los Angeles for Sydney's career, and filed for bankruptcy
In May 2022, Sweeney told Jimmy Fallon that she originally had to convince her parents to let her try acting, and she pitched a five-year plan for her career.
"My parents thought I was wanting to be a princess, that it wasn't real. You couldn't touch it. I was from a smaller town. So, I put together a five-year business plan presentation about what could happen if they let me," she recalled.
The family moved to Los Angeles in 2010 to help push Sydney's career forward, and in the winter 2022 issue of C Magazine, she said they shared a one-bedroom hotel room for almost a year.
"My mom, my dad, my brother, and I were in a regular one-bedroom hotel room for nine months." Sweeney added: "I was 16 — not the year when you want to be living in a hotel, sharing a bed with your mom."
In 2023, she told Women's Health that the move was financially crippling for the family, and they couldn't afford to keep their house in Spokane, Washington.
"I watched my parents lose a lot. We filed for bankruptcy, and they lost their house back home on the lake. We couldn't afford life in L.A. We couldn't afford life anywhere," she said.
Sydney's parents divorced shortly before she landed "Euphoria"
Sydney's career started to take off in 2018 when she landed roles in HBO's "Sharp Objects" and "The Handmaid's Tale." Her parents divorced around that time, shortly before she won the role of Cassie Howard in "Euphoria."
The actor told Variety that the couple threw everything into supporting her career when she was younger.
"My parents sacrificed so much to support my dream, and they lost so much during it," she said: "I just felt a responsibility to show them that it was worth it."
Asked if those sacrifices led to the divorce, Sydney said she wasn't sure, but she feels responsible for the split.
"I'll never know. I think as a kid, as the eldest, I feel a responsibility. They'll say no, or they'll say yes, depending on what fight it is. But I'll always feel responsible. But that's okay."
