Watch: Taika Waititi dodges Philip Schofield's question about Rita Ora
Appearing on the show alongside Chris Evans to promote Lightyear, Schofield moved to ask the actor and director about his pop star girlfriend.
Towards the end of the interview, Schofield said: "Well, we've congratulated Chris on his birthday... so Taika are there wedding bells?"
Schofield was seemingly making reference to rumours in The Sun that Waititi and Ora are engaged.
The Thor: Ragnarok director quickly interrupted: "You can congratulate me! It's in August! Let's talk about my birthday!"
Waititi then pulled out his earpiece and threw it away and said: "What? Sorry, you're breaking up! Nope, gone!"
Schofield responded by saying: "Shall I not ask about Rita?" And co-host Holly Willoughby remarked: "I think he can't hear us!"
Throughout the ordeal, Evans just kept laughing as the interview went off the rails.
Schofield got the last word in before the interview was abruptly ended: "Regardless, she's gorgeous, we love her here, she's always a great guest and congratulations!"
Social media was quick take note of the awkward moment with many criticising Schofield's line of questioning.
One user wrote: "Imagine ending it by trying to ask about Rita when they’re promoting a film, no wonder he pulled his ear piece out."
Another added: "I think Philip Schofield is the most irritating man on television."
Waititi and Ora are said to have been in a relationship since the beginning of 2021, going public at last year's premiere of The Suicide Squad though they have known each other for years.
Ora paid tribute to Waititi earlier this year on Instagram, posting a number of photos and writing: “Us. 4 years ago. To now. thanks for being cool. And entertaining me forevs..Happy Valentine’s Day bestie.”
Lightyear comes to cinemas on 24 June.
