Causing Tailbacks: Runaway Tractor Controlled By Sheepdog Crashes Onto Motorway

A sheepdog caused traffic chaos in Scotland by taking control of a tractor and crashing it through a fence onto a motorway.

The mischievous canine leaned on the controls of Tom Hamilton's farm vehicle in South Lanarkshire and ploughed it through the field barrier on Wednesday morning.

The tractor smashed onto a carriageway of the M74 and only came to a halt when it hit the central reservation.

Luckily four-and-a-half-year-old sheepdog Don was unhurt, and police cleared the motorway in South Lanarkshire in half an hour.

The dog’s owner, Tom Hamilton, 77, was tending to a lamb when the tractor went off course.

He said: ‘I was out in the mini tractor and had stepped out of it to get a lamb which looked like it was about to get out of the gate.’

'I ran after it but I couldn't catch up. I can't really run very fast and I ended up falling over.

'I was just hoping Don was going to be all right and that it wouldn't hit any of the cars on the road.

Tom, who has run the sheep farm since 1961, said the police had yet to get in touch with him regarding the incident.

'I've not had to apologise to anyone yet, but maybe it'll come. I'm just glad it didn't cause an accident.'

Traffic Scotland tweeted the incident as it happened, enjoying the hilarity of the situation.
