The M6 northbound near Knutsford in Cheshire was closed after a collision between two lorries just before 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Police dubbed the collision a ‘gincident’ after explaining that one of the lorries was a tanker carrying around 32,000 litres of concentrated gin, which was leaking onto the carriageway.

Cheshire Police said the flammability of the alcohol meant the motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 19 and 20, while a 300 metre cordon was put in place and a number of motorists evacuated from their vehicles.

The incident prompted an amused response from Twitter users.

One asked: “Was it in the sloe lane?”.

Another said: “What are the odds of lorry carrying gin colliding into one carrying tonic water? With lime trees alongside the M6!”

Rachel Sargeant wrote: “Been sat on the m6 for two hours so far. 200 yards away from 32,000 litres of spilt gin! Heartbreaking that I don’t have a straw.”

Cheshire Police said there were no injuries as a result of the crash.
