Taylor Swift has announced the title of the 13th track from her upcoming album, Midnights, which will be released on October 21. It is called Midnights Mayhem With Me, tying in with the album title.
The TikTok revealing the news was posted at midnight and in the video, the singer-songwriter sits next to a lottery ball spin machine filled with 13 balls, for the album’s 13 songs.
She starts the video saying: “I know that I have a habit of dropping cryptic clues and Easter eggs when giving you information about my new music and I’m not here to deny that but I am here to defy that.”
Swift also explained that the ball machine would “allow fate to decide exactly what track titles I’m going to be announcing and in what order”.
One TikTok user has already dropped a theory that Swift’s entire album will be “M” themed since it is the 13th letter of the alphabet, and that fans should expect all the track titles to being with M.
Swift announced her upcoming album at the 2022 MTV VMAs in August while accepting the Video of the Year award for All Too Well (10 Minute Version). Since then, she’s continued to drop hints about Midnights, such as by sharing the cover art and posting behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album.
In an August Instagram post, Swift described Midnights as “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered” throughout her life.
“We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears,” she shared. “We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t right in this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake. This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve … we’ll meet ourselves.”
In the past, Swift has also given more insight into her behind-the-scenes songwriting process.
In her acceptance speech for songwriter-artist of the decade award at the Nashville Songwriters Association International ceremony she explained her three secret genres.
“I’ve never talked about this publicly before, because, well, it’s dorky but I also have, in my mind, secretly, established genre categories for lyrics I write. Three of them, to be exact,” she said.
She continued: “They are affectionately titled Quill Lyrics, Fountain Pen Lyrics, and Glitter Gel Pen Lyrics,” the singer said.
“I came up with these categories based on what writing tool I imagine having in my hand when I scribbled it down, figuratively,”
