Did Taylor Swift snub Celine Dion at the Grammys?

The Grammys weren’t all about the music this year, with many viewers left with one burning question – did Taylor Swift snub Celine Dion?

Dion has been battling neurological condition Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) but made a surprise appearance at the glitzy event in Los Angeles, appearing on stage to present Swift with a gong. However, some people reckon the Shake It Off singer gave Dion rather short shrift.

Music fans have been discussing it on social media, with some saying it looked as if Swift was being “rude” and snubbing Dion but others pointing out that she was probably just “overwhelmed”.

Dion presented an award to Swift

Dion revealed in 2022 that she was living with SPS, a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and spasms. So fans were thrilled to see her at one of the showbiz industry’s biggest nights. She appeared on stage to announce the winner of the night’s top gong - Album Of The Year.

It was no big surprise when the prize went to Swift’s Midnights, in what was a particularly special win as it meant the star had made history by taking home the coveted accolade for the fourth time.

She looked stunned as her name was announced and hugged members of her team as the crowd gave her a standing ovation. Understandably excited as she arrived on the podium, Swift didn’t seem to greet Dion as she turned to someone behind her.

Then her hand popped out and she accepted her statue, while not appearing to have spoken to Dion or made eye contact with the star.

Some fans convinced Swift snubbed Dion

Many fans were fuming about the moment, flocking to social media to insist that Swift was “disrespectful” in the way she accepted her award.

“Taylor Swift completely ignored Celine when she got on stage!” one posted on X. Another asked: “Did Taylor swift snub Celine Dion or is she just too cool to acknowledge a legend? Seriously, that was horrific.”

Someone else remarked: “Ok… I love Taylor Swift just as much as the next, but that snub to music royalty Celine Dion was so distasteful. Taylor didn’t even make eye contact with Celine when she grabbed the Grammy… gross… This was next level.”

Another accused Swift of being “rude”, adding: “Yeah I mean it’s Celine’s first big public appearance since being diagnosed with a pretty serious degenerative condition.”

“Taylor I have been supporting you nonstop girl but tonight was a huge fail,” said someone else. “Celine Dion the legend who is seriously ill was up there to give you an award and you said nothing??? You ignored her? Come on. Be better.”

Swifties have backed the star

However, fans of the chart-topper have pointed out that it was a huge win for Swift and that she was probably caught up in the moment as opposed to being deliberately dismissive.

“Taylor was talking to someone behind her,” one said on X. “Not rude, just distracted.” “Taylor Swift will be the last person in the music industry to be rude to someone or ignore someone, please,” said another fan. “She was even accused of being ‘fake’ before because she is ‘too sweet’ to everyone. Give her a break.”

Another commented: “It wasn’t a deliberate snub, but Taylor Swift really dropped the ball by barely acknowledging Celine - an icon and industry trailblazer who has suffered well-documented personal adversity.”

“God forbid Taylor Swift is a human being who makes mistakes YES she should have acknowledged Celine Dion, like she always does when receiving an award YES she was overwhelmed and in a state of shock/euphoria so she got caught up in the moment - those two things can coexist,” pointed out someone else.

After the awards

However, Swift seemed to lay the gossip to rest after the ceremony, when she and Dion shared a sweet moment and a hug backstage.

The pair were photographed together behind the scenes, with the images showing them both smiling as Swift wrapped her arm around Dion’s shoulder.
