Teacher who 'ignites passion for languages' shortlisted for top education award

A teacher who has dedicated herself to instilling "a passion for languages" in her pupils is in the running for a national award.

Neetu Sadhwani, head of modern foreign languages at Avanti House Secondary School and Harrow Collegiate Subject Lead, has been shortlisted for Subject Lead of the Year (Secondary) at the TES Awards 2024.

The TES Schools Awards recognises the best teachers and schools from both state and independent schools across the UK, including early years settings, primary and secondary schools.

The awards, hosted by magazine the Times Educational Supplement, recognises exceptional teachers and schools nationwide.

Ms Sadhwani said: "I am truly honoured to be nominated for Best Subject Lead of the Year.

"With 17 years of teaching and leading the languages department, I've dedicated myself to igniting a passion for languages in our students.

"From organizing educational visits to coordinating enrichment opportunities, my goal has always been to create an environment where students not only excel academically but also develop a genuine passion for languages."

Avanti House Secondary School, located in Stanmore, is the only Hindu faith school to be shortlisted amongst the 21 award categories.

The shortlist was determined by a panel of educational leaders and experts.

Simon Arnell, principal at Avanti House Secondary School, said: "We are so proud that Ms Sadhwani’s outstanding leadership of modern foreign languages has been recognised in her shortlisting for such a nationwide and prestigious award."

A GCSE Spanish student at Avanti House Secondary School praised Ms Sadhwani’s teaching style, adding that she is a "very patient and amiable teacher".

Jon Severs, editor of TES Magazine, said: “Congratulations to all the shortlisted entries - the standard was so high this year despite the challenges schools face."

Avanti House Secondary School, part of the multi-academy Avanti Schools Trust, aims to nurture creative and confident young minds, focusing equally on high academic attainment, character development, and spiritual enlightenment.

The winners of the TES Awards will be announced at a gala awards night on June 21 at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, in London.
