Ted Lasso season 3 spoilers follow.

Ted Lasso star Billy Harris has spoken about the fan response to his character’s storyline in the third season.

In the latest season of the Apple TV+ show, Harris’ Colin Hughes was revealed to be gay after beginning a relationship with Michael (Sam Liu), with a later development seeing the character spotted in a gay bar by journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance).

Fans had long speculated that Colin was gay following a remark about dating app Grindr in the second season, and Harris revealed to Variety that he was heartened by the response to the storyline.

“What I loved the most – what I felt like from the moment the line was said – is [that] a community felt represented in their favourite TV show,” he said. “I have nothing but love and loyalty and gratitude to every Colin Hughes fan, because they’ve been there from that moment."

“I’ve read pretty much every tweet, which I know I shouldn’t do, but I just love Colin and to see that support from other people is just really, really nice,” he continued. “I’ve spoken to some amazing people. People basically saying that they wish their younger self could have watched this.

“I’ve had so many people telling me: ‘I loved football, but I was also gay in school and I knew well the prejudices that go hand-in-hand with being gay and being a footballer’. That’s been amazing. It’s been so lovely to see the responses to the story.”

With the show potentially set to conclude following the latest batch of episodes, series co-creator Brendan Hunt revealed exclusively to Digital Spy why they decided to tell Colin’s story in the home stretch.

“We almost had it as a storyline in season two, but we decided it actually tells the story better if we show another year,” he said. “It's a story that comes up a lot in football, and we're trying to show at least some of the reality of how football works.”

Ted Lasso season 3 streams on Apple TV+, with new episodes every Wednesday.
