A teenager has been charged with murder after he beheaded his mother and walked out of their family home with her head in his hand.

Oliver Mauricio Funes Machada called the police following the horrific act and left his home in North Carolina carrying the head of 35-year-old Yesenia Funez Beatriz Machado, along with the large knife he used to kill her. He was later arrested.

Her body was later discovered inside the property by police – who say that two young girls were also found unharmed inside the house.

A fourth child was believed to be at school at the time of the attack, while Ms Machado’s husband was at work.

Funes Machada is expected to undergo psychiatric evaluation, and has appeared at a preliminary hearing where court documents revealed that he is currently taking four different medications for psychosis and schizophrenia.

Local authorities also disclosed that Macheda is living in the US illegally and is originally from Honduras.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Staff Terry Wright said: ‘Officers encountered the suspect holding a knife and, as reported, also holding his mother’s head in the other arm.

‘It’s tough for the deputies. It’s tough for the communities. We will be offering any of them assistance who just may need it because it was a horrific scene that first responders had to respond to.’
