Temperatures to finally top 20 degrees as fine weekend of weather looming

There is finally some good news about the weather with the Met Office saying next week is looking more "optimistic" amid reports that we could see 20C with fine weather over the second weekend of May. The long range forecast for the UK says temperatures are likely to be above normal for early May.

Some weather maps are showing temperatures of 20C in Cardiff, Conwy, and Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday, May 11, with highs of 18C in Swansea and Cardigan.

Before that the bank holiday is set to be mixed with sunshine and showers but an area of high pressure looks set to move in across the UK during the middle of next week. You can read what Derek Brockway has to say about that here.

The Met Office says bank holiday Monday looks to be a "mixed bag" with showers developing but with decent spells of sunshine in between and temperatures a little above average. From Tuesday onwards the forecasting agency says it looks like high pressure will start to build – potentially bringing a more settled and drier period.

The forecast for Wales says there will be some sunshine, particularly by Tuesday, with conditions staying warm, with generally light winds. The long-range UK forecast says there are "strong signals" for a continued build of high pressure across the UK by the middle of next week.

It adds: "This will bring more in the way of dry and fine weather for most areas although there is still a chance of some showers in places at first and a risk also of some more persistent rain rounding the high into north-western parts of the country. The high is likely to maintain influence into the weekend before starting to weaken the following week. So a continuation of fine conditions next weekend seems likely before a return of less settled conditions by the end of the period. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal for early May."
