Temperatures hit 27.7C in Suffolk on Tuesday as warm spell continues

Sunseekers were out in force in Suffolk on Tuesday as the mercury hit nearly 28C.

Visitors flocked to Felixstowe beach and enjoyed the attractions in the county's resort towns as a long-overdue heatwave took hold following months of under-average temperatures and heavy rain.

A high of 27.7C at Santon Downham in west Suffolk was recorded by weather forecasters at the Met Office on Tuesday, with similar highs expected on Wednesday and Thursday, or possibly even hitting 30C or above.

The warm spell is expected to break on Friday, with temperatures of 22 to 24C.

Suffolk, as well as the majority of the rest of the country, is in the middle of a yellow heat health warning from the UK Health Security Agency.

The yellow status means the hot weather has "potential for significant impacts" across the health and social care sector with a risk to those who are particularly vulnerable.

It will be in place until 5pm on Thursday.

The East of England was among the regions issued with the strongest warnings with the "potential for significant impacts to be observed across the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures".

But the sunshine and clear skies brought crowds of people to the seaside - with Felixstowe beachfront busy with families enjoying the conditions.

It comes after a spell of mild summer weather at the start of June, with several days of rainfall.
