Tenerife expert issues chilling Jay Slater warning and says 'it's inevitable'

A Tenerife expert had warned about the treacherous terrain missing Jay Slater is believed to have disappeared in - YEARS before. Phone signal data showed his last location as the rugged Rural de Teno park, an area popular with hikers.

On Sunday, Spanish police were searching around two structures at the bottom of a ravine in the park. They were seen examining the inside of blue barrels outside one of the small buildings - and it has now emerged the terrain is infamous among experts.

Vicente Infante, trails spokesman of the Tenerife Mountain Federation, warned: "Hikers in the past were prepared, used suitable footwear, helmets... In short, they carried all the equipment. What happens nowadays is that many people go with normal trainers, shorts, shirts... that is where the risks are.

"More and more people are going, so sooner or later an accident will happen. It is inevitable.” He went on: "They come from other countries and think that we live in an eternal spring and that there is no danger. Most of those who have accidents are people from abroad, tourists, with no knowledge of the area."

He added: "Information exists, but it is hard to find and confusing. Each institution signs the paths in a different way and this generates confusion. What you see on the panel at the start of a path may not coincide with what it says in the leaflet and this, in turn, with what appears on the website."

In addition, signs are "often missing, broken or painted over". There is nowhere to obtain fresh drinking water hikes through the park can be gruelling. Lancashire constabulary said it had made “an offer of support to the Guardia Civil to see if they need any additional resources” but this had been rejected by Spanish authorities.
