An extreme security measure has been introduced by one Tesco supermarket to crack down on shoplifting and improve the safety of workers. The branch has started scrutinising patrons on CCTV before allowing them admission.

Rather than immediately opening, the shop's automatic doors in Southville, Bristol, now remain closed until employees have used the cameras to identify potential or known thieves.

In addition, baskets have reportedly been removed from the shop entry to prevent thefts and quick escapes. Staff informed that this "nightclub-style door policy" is employed between 6am - 9am and during late evenings - periods when no security guards are present.

A Tesco representative clarified that all Tesco Express stores are equipped with a remote-controlled door access system, which can be triggered by staff when they perceive the risk of assaults or thefts, reports Bristol Live.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated: "We take thefts from shops seriously and encourage store workers to report incidents, especially when threats or violence is used."

Furthermore, he added: "There has been a nationwide increase in reported shoplifting offences and that is reflected across Avon and Somerset."

As per him: "Where repeat and prolific offenders have been identified, officers encourage shops to issue civil banning letters, which, if ignored, can provide evidence to enable action to be taken under Anti-Social Behaviour legislation."
