Tess Daly was full of nostalgia which led to fans flooding her with messages as she reflected on Strictly Come Dancing's huge milestone. The hit BBC One dance contest first aired on May 15 2004 as a new incarnation of the professional dancing series Come Dancing.

Twenty years on and over the weekend, Strictly won the best entertainment gong at the Bafta Television Awards for the third time on Sunday (May 12).

When the series first began, Tess Daly and Sir Bruce Forsyth presented the show together and Len Goodman, Dame Arlene Phillips, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli were the judges. Tess has since co-hosted with Claudia Winkleman from 2014 onwards, while the judging line-up currently includes Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and former Strictly professional dancer Anton Du Beke.

Celebrities, politicians and sportspeople have competed on Strictly over the years including former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe, former Labour MP Ed Balls, comedian Bill Bailey, actress Patsy Kensit, Spice Girl star Emma Bunton and singer Lulu.

It was first won by journalist Natasha Kaplinsky and New Zealand dancer Brendan Cole. The most recent to lift the coveted Glitterball trophy in the main series was former Coronation Street actress Ellie Leach and Italian dancer Vito Coppola.

Reflecting on the 20th anniversary, Tess, 53, shared a photo of herself and late entertainer Bruce as well as a photo of herself and Claudia to Instagram and said: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY @bbcstrictly.

"It’s 20 years ago today since the first episode aired in 2004 with the legend Sir Bruce Forsyth (and I was pregnant then with Phoebe my eldest!) We had no idea at that time it would go on for another two decades (and counting) and become a global hit in so many overseas territories (where the show is known as Dancing with The Stars)."

She rounded off her post by writing: "Forever grateful to be a part of a show that feels so joyful and magical and to share that with the absolute GIFT that is @claudiawinkle #keepdancing."

And it didn't take long for the comments to come flooding in. @tracey_3333 said: "THE best show on tv without question and I cannot wait for the new series." @x.dianne_buswell.x commented: "This show is the best thing ever, I’d be lost without it! Happy 20 years."
