Tetiaroa - the remote island where Pippa Middleton is on honeymoon

Pippa Middleton and her new husband James Matthews have travelled thousands of miles to a remote Polynesian island for their honeymoon.

Here's what we know about the tiny South Pacific atoll of Tetiaroa.

Tetiaro is part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, 9,237 miles (14,866km) from the UK. The nearest large island is Tahiti, 30 miles to the north, while Hawaii is 2,580 miles north.

You can get there via a 20-minute private plane flight from Tahiti.

It has a rich heritage and traditionally was where Tahitian royalty would go on holiday; Tahitian princesses in particular would visit to 'beautify' themselves by staying out of the sunshine (so their skin would lighten) and eat lots to gain weight (voluptuousness was considered highly desirable).

:: Pippa ties the knot

The first people to visit Polynesia arrived from Southeast Asia about 4,000 years ago, reaching the most easterly Society Islands by around 1100 AD. They voyaged in outrigger canoes with coconuts, bananas, breadfruit, chickens and pigs.

The first Europeans followed, the most famous being Captain James Cook, who first arrived in Polynesia in 1769.

His second in command of his third voyage, Lieutenant Bligh, returned years later on the Bounty as Captain Bligh, to retrieve the local breadfruit plant to feed the far-flung British Empire.

He was overthrown by his crew, as told in Mutiny on the Bounty.

The incident continued to play a part in the area's history, with French Polynesia 'discovered' by Hollywood legend Marlon Brando while scouting film locations for his 1962 film version of Mutiny on the Bounty.

The actor decided to buy the island after he met and married his third wife and the film's leading lady, Tarita Teriipia, while visiting French Polynesia.

Although locals resisted the idea, Brando eventually secured a 99-year lease of exclusive "ownership" over the South Pacific atoll for a mere £15,000 in 1966.

Brando died in 2004, but Tetiaroa is still maintained in line with his ecological vision - and The Brando resort, where Pippa and James are thought to be staying, is one of the most eco-friendly hotels on the planet.

Made up of 35 thatched villas, it is 100% energy independent, thanks to solar panels and coconut oil-fuelled generators, while the air conditioning is powered by deep seawater.

It is also not cheap, with a minimum rate of €3,000 (£2,592) per night for two guests in a single-bedroom villa.

Surrounded by coral reef, Tetiaroa is home to at least 167 species of fish, including parrotfish and spotted eagle rays, while dolphins and whales are often spotted off the coast.

Sea turtles are known to lay their eggs on the island, in the coral sand beneath shady trees, while thousands of sea birds can be spotted overhead.

Activities include paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkelling.

Pippa and James are not the only A-list celebrities to holiday there in 2017. Earlier this year, it was reported Barack Obama had spent time there after leaving the White House.
