TfL update on when new DLR trains will be rolled out after delay

Transport for London (TfL) has provided an update on when its new DLR trains will be rolled out, suggesting that this could be done as late as December. The authority has said that the new stock is 'set to start to be introduced by the end of 2024'.

This means the process could begin as late as December. The rollout is thought to be slightly delayed, with the first new train originally due to be introduced in March.

All 54 of them are forecast to be in service by the summer of 2026. In an email to customers on March 28, officials said that they had shortened the length of trains operating on some routes to tow cars.

This began on February 6 and allows TfL to 'better protect the existing fleet and ensure that customers can continue to receive a regular and reliable service over the next two years'. 33 of the network's new trains will replace the oldest trains in the fleet, and the remainder will be used to 'boost capacity and meet growing demand across the DLR network'.

Customers can now book assistance

It comes as TfL and KeolisAmey Docklands (KAD) have launched a six-month trial to help make journeys on the DLR more accessible. Access DLR allows customers to pre-book assistance when travelling.

Customers requiring assistance can book online or by phone and the trial will run daily between 7am and 7pm. This follows TfL’s recent Equity in Motion plan, which includes 'more than 80 commitments to make London’s transport network more accessible and inclusive for all'

A spokesperson for the authority said: "This trial follows other major improvement projects for DLR services with new trains set to start to be introduced by the end of 2024. TfL is introducing 54 new trains to the DLR fleet to replace the oldest trains, some of which are over 30 years old.

"This will help improve the frequency and reliability of services and offer better facilities for those with mobility impairments and accessibility needs. The new trains feature spacious and more accessible walk-through carriages, three multi-use areas for large items like prams and luggage, in addition to three dedicated wheelchair spaces and improved audio and visual real-time travel information."
