The Crown: Fans are loving Jonny Lee Miller as John Major

With the premiere of season five of The Crown on Netflix, fans have found themselves an unlikely heartthrob in the form of Prime Minister John Major.

Part of the new cast, the former Prime Minister is portrayed by Trainspotting actor Jonny Lee Miller as the series shows his time in office between 1990 and 1997.

One viewer compared Miller's look as Major to Clark Kent aka Superman, writing on social media: "Oh look it's Clark Kent, I mean, John Major."

Another also tweeted: "For all the talk of Dominic West being too attractive to play Prince Charles in #TheCrown, it was Jonny Lee Miller as John Major that proved the most distracting to us. No matter what wig you put him in, he's gonna stay pretty cute."

One Miller fan also joked: "Erm, Jonny Lee Miller in a wig is still Jonny Lee Miller. Does this mean I’ve got a thing for John Major now?! Christ."

Major himself has been incredibly critical of the show and its depiction of his relationship with the Royal Family.

In a letter to the Daily Telegraph, Major took particular issue with the depiction of a meeting between himself and the then Prince Charles.

Major said the scene “will be profoundly hurtful to a family who are still grieving for the very person on whose life the entire drama was founded”.

The former Tory Prime Minister also said: “Fiction should not be paraded as fact. I gather Netflix continues to refuse to put out a disclaimer at the top of the opening credits, on the basis that ‘everyone knows this is a drama series’. But this is simply not good enough. If everyone knows, why not acknowledge that?"

Other Prime Ministers to be depicted in the hit series include Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden and Margaret Thatcher. Tony Blair is also set to appear in season five.
