The Great British Bake Off 2022 champion has been won Sybria Yusoff, thanks to her risk taking and bold flavours.

The 32-year-old cardiovascular research assistant from Malaysia is the first woman to win the baking competition for five years.

She said: "It's been a while since there was a woman winner so here I am all girls - I'm here. We can do what ever we want as long as we work for it."

Syabira won the contest with an edible sculpture showstopper celebrating planet earth in the shape of an orangutan in the forest.

Her bold flavours - including black pepper genoise sponge and tarragon shortbread helped her bag the title.

She said: "I cant believe it, honestly it hasn't sinked down, it's unbelievable.

"This is the biggest achievement in my life, all the hard work, all the trial and error, it's all worth it. I'm very proud.

"I think I'm coming out a new person after this competition. I've become more confident."

Judge Prue Leith said: "Syabira practices like anything and she's imaginative. She is a very skilful baker."

Paul Hollywood said: "Syabira can be a risk taker and it's paid off. Some of the flavours I've had in the tent from her I've never had before and am unlikely to ever have again."

Runner-up Sandro said: "She deserved it - she's queen of flavours. I'm happy I got this far. It's been a dream."

Abudl added: "This is a massive achievement, I'm so proud of myself. Syabira deserved it. For her this meant so much and I'm so happy for her."

The final saw the bakers producer a signature summer picnic including cake, pies and finger sandwiches with home baked bread.

Syabira's neat bakes reminded judge Hollywood of a hotel and her unusual fish paste and salsa verde sandwiches were declared delicious by Leith.

All the finalists struggled with the technical challenge of a Summer Pudding Bomb. When Abdul was placed first, Hollywood said: "Don't clap", as he won simply by being the least messy.

The showstopper saw Sandro create an ocean cake surrounded by iced bun boulders, beneath a sun of profiteroles. But he gave up on his planned solar system of biscuits when he ran out of time.

Abdul's edible sculpture was bee themed and packed with honey, featuring honey cake, honeycomb biscuits and bee-shaped choux buns.
