Comedy actor Simon Bird, who shot to fame in The Inbetweeners, is returning to Channel 4 with a new sitcom about a hyper-religious community.

Everyone Else Burns is a six-part comedy about the Lewises, a Mancunian family devoted to a puritanical Christian sect and how they navigate modern life with their belief that the world could end tomorrow.

Bird, who also starred in Friday Night Dinner for Channel 4, moves into playing a parent rather than a son for the first time in a sitcom as dad David Lewis who is striving to become a church elder.

Kate O'Flynn plays his wife Fiona, and together they are parents to 17-year-old Rachel who wants to go to university, and 12-year-old Aaron who is battling against secular bullies.

Everyone Else Burns isn't the only new comedy coming to Channel 4 - the broadcaster has also acquired Spreadsheet, starring The IT Crowd's Katherine Parkinson.

She plays a divorced mum with a busy lawyer's career who is looking for no-strings-attached sex, but finds it impossible to juggle the demands of her young children, her annoying ex and her work with dating apps.

In a bid to get organised about dating, she creates a spreadsheet of sex options, but finds herself plagued by a series of needy men that even Excel can't help her to control.

Parkinson said: "It was so much fun filming Spreadsheet in Melbourne with the most brilliant team of people. I loved living Lauren’s hectic life for a few months, and I am thinking about going on dating apps myself now."

All 4 has also announced a string of hit series set to land on the streaming service over the next month.

Viewers can look out for box sets of The Big Bang Theory, Threesome, Weeds, Nashville and The West Wing, all either streaming now or due to land this month.
