Beloved children’s characters The Wombles are due to get a reboot, with a new batch of episodes heading our way written by the same scribe behind How To Train Your Dragon.

Developed with Altitude Television, the same production house that gave us ITV’s recent glossy remake of Sir Michael Caine’s The Ipcress File and Horrible Histories: The Movie, a new version of The Wombles will return to our tellies soon, providing a modernised take on a familiar family classic.

Unfortunately, The Wombles’ remake does not yet have a set air date. With the project still in the early stages of development, it’s unclear when they might reemerge from their burrows once more.

That said, we do know that their new series is being written by Will Davies, the same screenwriter behind family-friendly hits How To Train Your Dragon, Aardman’s Flushed Away, Johnny English and Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.

Based on characters created in 1968 by children’s author Elisabeth Beresford, Wombles are small, fictional creatures that live in holes and burrows.

They first appeared in a series of children’s books penned by Beresford throughout the late 1960s and 1970s which focused on the Wombles that lived underneath Wimbledon Common although, according to Beresford, Wombles exist all over the world.

Shy and reclusive, Wombles love to recycle rubbish and transform it into useful items, making their overall message a timely one in 2023 with our ongoing climate issues. Their motto is “make good use of bad rubbish” and they made their TV debut via a stop-motion animated series that ran from 1973 to 1975 and featured the voice of Bernard Cribbins who acted as series narrator and the voice of the Wombles.

The characters were revived for another animated series in the late 1990s, this time with a batch of Canadian actors providing their voices.

In between, the characters dipped their furry toes into music, releasing a number of earworm tracks like “Remember You’re A Womble” and “Wombling Merry Christmas”, both in 1974.

The latter even managed to make it to number two in the record charts of that year.

Unfortunately, there’s no trailer or footage available for The Wombles remake just yet but as soon as it arrives, you’ll find it here.
