Then and Now: Changes down a city centre thoroughfare

THEN: St Nicholas Street, Worcester, looking towards The Cross in 1910 below.

A familiar city centre thoroughfare for many, it had been widened in the late 19th century for that purpose.

The distinctive stepped tower of St Nicholas Church, with the building rebuilt in around 1730, stands out.

NOW: The same position in St Nicholas Street in 2024 below with the tower and cupola still a glorious sight.

No longer a church after closing in 1989, it is now the Slug and Lettuce bar.

Another big change, though more architecturally, was the replacement of the buildings on the near left with the Co-op department store.

Co-op, which had previously been in what is now O’Neill’s pub further down, is long gone from the 1960s building known as Trinity House and it has since been used in various ways.
