Thieves stole a set of temporary traffic lights installed during roadworks outside a Nottinghamshire school. Two pedestrian crossing lights were also taken.

Officers are now investigating after the lights disappeared from Toton Lane in Stapleford, outside Fairfield Spencer Academy. It happened at around 11.45pm on Saturday, April 27, police said.

Nottinghamshire Police warned it "could have caused a serious accident on a dangerous bend" and said it led to "anxiety and distress" for motorists. It is believed the lights were taken away in a van or lorry.

Witnesses are now being urged to come forward. Police also want to hear from drivers who may have dashcam footage to help the investigation.

PCSO Christopher Jones, who is investigating the incident, said: “This theft meant that the flow of the traffic was impeded with a set of lights missing which could have caused a serious accident on a dangerous bend during a lane closure. The incident would also have caused motorists a great deal of anxiety and distress.

“We believe the lights would have been loaded into a van or a flatbed lorry, due to their size and height. As part of our ongoing inquiries, which include checking CCTV and doorbell camera footage, we are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information or dashcam footage of suspicious activity in the area to please get in touch with us."

New temporary lights were put in place following the theft.
