Thomas Kingston, Husband of Lady Gabriella, Died from 'Traumatic Head Wound'

British financier Kingston died on Sunday, with a family statement calling his death a "great shock"

An inquest has revealed the cause of death of Thomas Kingston, the husband of royal family member Lady Gabriella.

A spokesperson for the coroner's office confirms to PEOPLE, "The cause of death given was traumatic wound to the head."

According to The Telegraph, Kingston died by suicide at his parents’ home in the Cotswolds on Sunday. He was 45.

Senior coroner for Gloucestershire, Katy Skerrett, said Kingston had lunch with his parents before his father took their dogs on a walk, the outlet reported.

"On his return, Mr. Kingston was not in the house," Skerrett said, according to The Telegraph.

A post from Sky News correspondent Dan Whitehead on X (formerly Twitter) shared that Skerrett said Kingston "was found in a locked outbuilding with a catastrophic head injury — a gun was found at the scene."

The inquest has been adjourned to a later date, PEOPLE confirms.

King Charles and Queen Camilla also sent their “heartfelt thoughts” to the monarch's second cousin Lady Gabriella, 42, following the news of her husband’s death.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, "The King and The Queen have been informed of Thomas’s death and join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family. In particular, Their Majesties send their most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family.”

Lady Gabriella is the only daughter of Prince Michael of Kent, who was first cousins with Queen Elizabeth.

She married Kingston, who was a director at Devonport Capital and former hostage negotiator in Iraq, in May 2019 at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, just a year after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also tied the knot there. Harry was a guest at the nuptials, making a surprise appearance just weeks after his son Archie was born, along with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

Hours before news of Kingston's death was made public, Queen Camilla, 76, joined Lady Gabriella's parents, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and other members of the royal family at the service of Thanksgiving at St. George's Chapel to honor King Constantine of Greece, who died last year.

The late King of Greece was a godfather to Lady Gabriella, and she attended his funeral last year on behalf of Prince William, who was also one of Constantine's godchildren.

Lady Gabriella is 56th in the line of succession to the throne, but she is not a working member of the royal family. She works as a freelance journalist, but she and her husband were frequent fixtures at family events following their marriage.

The couple was at the memorial service for Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in March 2022, Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee that June and the monarch's funeral a few months later. Last summer, the pair watched the Royal Ascot with King Charles and Queen Camilla from the Royal Box and stepped out again for a Chanel exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The couple joined Queen Camilla less than two weeks before his death at a Celebration of Shakespeare event on Feb. 14.
