Thornhill Gala Queen crowning to kick-off week of celebrations

Amira Harkness will be crowned as this year’s Thornhill Gala Queen on Sunday, kick starting a week of celebrations.

She will be supported on her special day with a retinue of attendants Imogen Renwick and Jessica Ellis-Keogh, plus page boy Harry Marsh.

Sunday’s crowning ceremony will be followed by live music from the band, Under Neon, and there will be inflatables, face painting, traditional game stalls, tuck shop, burger stall and a cash bar.

The Duchal village’s hardworking committee have lined-up free events all week leading up to gala day on Saturday, July 13.

That includes the return of the Tattie Bogle competition with them set to pop up around Thornhill from today until Sunday, July 14 – with cash prizes on offer for the best.

All other entertainment will be in Thornhill Community Centre or its gardens, and flyers will be delivered all round the village this week, giving details and times of all the events.

Monday will see a teddy bears’ picnic, with entertainment from The Road Runner, and a pet show in the evening.

There is family prize bingo on Tuesday evening; a coffee afternoon with musical entertainment on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the popular car treasure hunt in the evening.

A kid’s treasure hunt outside the Co-op on Thursday afternoon will be followed by inflatables and music, and finally football on the school playing fields.

It paves the way for the gala day itself next Saturday with the rideout leaving Wallace Hall Academy at 9.30am, and Thornhill Bowling Club will host target bowls with a coffee morning and tombola at 10am.

After the judging of the fancy dress entries, the Buccleuch and Queensberry Caledonia Pipe Band will lead the gala parade from the community centre at noon, returning to start off a full afternoon of entertainment, including the Penpont Dancers, Daffy Dill, Think Circus, and a lively finale by The Dogz.

There will also be free inflatables and fairground rides for all ages, craft and other stalls, food and ice cream vans, the beer tent, teas and coffees, baking, and painting.
