Three big matters that could be decided for Newcastle United and England tonight

Kieran Trippier must wait to see how much of a part he will play in England's clash with Holland tonight at the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

Trippier's role with the Three Lions has been described as "fantastic" by Gareth Southgate with the encounter in Dortmund absolutely crucial on three fronts. Defeat for England could see Trippier hang up his boots for his country and the exit of Southgate as boss.

If that does prove the case, it will only increase talk that Eddie Howe will be a leading candidate to replace Southgate. Howe has played down talk that he is ready for international football but if he was to be offered the job, his stock must be high and after transforming Newcastle from relegation fodder to European contenders, he is currently still on an upward trajectory.

It's not every day that a manager gets offered the ultimate job in English football - to lead out the Three Lions and take a place in the Wembley dug out as boss. Whether it does prove to be a temptation for Howe is still unclear but Newcastle are due back in pre-season imminently.

Tonight Howe will be like any other English football fan and want to see Southgate and the boys advance to the final of a second successive Euro shootout. Mixed reports about England's team have hinted at Trippier's role tonight against Ronald Koeman's Dutch side.

Some outlets suggest fit-again Luke Shaw will start while others have gone for Trippier. Southgate said: "He's played in so many important nights for us over the last seven or eight years. But also around the squad and how he is. We're very fortunate to have him.

"Luke made a good contribution to the game (vs Switzerland), so that’s the decision we have to make, whether he’s ready to start, whether that’s the best way to use him. We are very happy to have him back. He obviously gives us balance, different balance with the team, but also Kieran has done a fantastic job."

The other talking point this evening will be whether Anthony Gordon finally adds to his cameo against Slovenia. Despite lacking spark, Gordon has been overlooked by the Three Lions.
