Three men arrested after climbing on to Anfield roof to watch Liverpool Champions League match

Three men have been arrested after they climbed on to the roof of Liverpool's stadium to watch a Champions League match.

Daredevil YouTuber and climber Kain Hogg, 23, and two friends scaled to the top of Anfield to see Tuesday's game against Real Madrid because they couldn't get tickets.

It is thought they sneaked in through a connecting building site, as the stadium is currently undergoing redevelopment work.

The trio reached the roof, where they took photos and videos, and watched two thirds of the match before being caught by stewards and arrested by Merseyside Police.

They are due to appear in court next month, charged with ticket evasion, entering enclosed premises and obtaining services dishonestly.

Hogg, from Kendal, Cumbria, said: "Tickets were sold out so the roof was our only option.

"We're very sorry to Liverpool FC and to the police that had to deal with the situation."

Liverpool's round of 16 match against Real, which the Spanish side won 5-2, was sold out, so Hogg and his friends were unable to obtain tickets.

To see the game, they gained access to the ground through a construction site at the Anfield Road end.

They crossed some scaffolding and climbed a ladder to the roof of the stadium where they watched the first half uninterrupted.

The trio wore high visibility jackets to look like stadium staff, until they were approached and questioned by a security guard, who then called the police.

The three men were arrested after they descended from the stadium roof. They will appear at Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in Liverpool on 27 March.

Hogg, who records climbing videos for his YouTube channel, said they accessed the stadium two hours before kick-off to make their way to the roof.

"When we were forced to come down we were surrounded by about 30 policemen and we spent 20 hours in a cell before being charged," he said.

"We didn't mean to upset anyone, we just wanted to watch our team play football in the Champions League."

Merseyside Police and Liverpool Football Club have been approached for comment.
