Three paddling pools to reopen but no date set for Llandudno

Conwy County Council has announced three of its paddling pools will open tomorrow – but a date is yet to be set for opening of the pool at Craig y Don in Llandudno. The council has announced that the paddling pools at Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr, and Rhos-on-Sea will be open from tomorrow (Friday).

But the council is unable to confirm when Craig y Don paddling pool will be open or if it will be ready for the bank holiday weekend at the end of the month. The council came under fire in April 2023 after it announced that all four paddling pools would not re-open before the summer last year, due to a high risk of people slipping.

At the time, the authority said the only UK provider who could install the specialist anti-slip coating needed was unable to complete the work due to ill health. Despite being unable to give a reopening date, Conwy says last week's spell of dry weather has also helped progress at Craig y Don, the largest pool of the four.

A council spokeswoman said: “All major construction work has been completed and contractors are now carrying out the final stages of their work when the weather allows. The opening date for Craig y Don paddling pool will be confirmed closer to the time.”

Cllr Aaron Wynne, Conwy's cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: "I'm delighted to announce that following extensive refurbishment three of our paddling pools will be opening.

"This has been a major investment to secure the long-term future of these much-loved community assets. I'm pleased they will be open for the bank holiday weekend and I hope we have some good weather this summer so that everyone gets the chance to enjoy them."

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, cabinet member for environment, roads, and facilities, said: "I'd like to thank our contractors for all their hard work, particularly given the almost constant wet weather we've had. They've really done all they can to get on site whenever conditions have allowed."
