Three times Mohamed Salah has raged at Jürgen Klopp as latest Liverpool outburst nothing new

A frustrating draw. A frosty exchange between Mohamed Salah and Jürgen Klopp, triggered by a substitution. That's how Liverpool started its season against Chelsea, and that's how it has effectively ended it too, with a point against West Ham dispelling any remaining hopes of the Premier League title.

The pair made headlines on the sidelines at the London Stadium. Klopp had left Salah out of Liverpool's starting line-up, and went to introduce him for the final 15 minutes or so. He would not make it on before West Ham had equalized, but the heated discussion with his manager came prior to that.

Klopp has been tight-lipped about what was said, but it's undoubtedly the kind of incident that you accept can happen between supremely driven individuals, especially in tough moments. Liverpool is certainly going through one of those, as a season which promised so much peters out.

Salah, of course, famously had some fallings-out with Sadio Mané on the pitch down the years. And this certainly wasn't his first run-in with Klopp either.

Chelsea vs Liverpool, August 2023

The situation was reversed in this season's opener, with Salah angry at being substituted off, rather than venting his frustration as he was about to come on. Klopp saw fit to hook him for youngster Ben Doak, with Liverpool still seeking a go-ahead goal, and the Egyptian responded angrily.

He stormed past Klopp, tearing off his own wrist bandage as he did so. He could be seen shaking his head too.

Roy Keane did not mince his words about that incident, telling Salah to sit down and shut up. And while Klopp was more diplomatic, he did send a reminder to his star player: "I'm the manager of the whole team."

Sheffield United vs Liverpool, April 2024

Wow, it's been a long month. The Sheffield United game feels like an age ago, but it was at the start of April that Klopp again saw fit to withdraw Salah with the game still in the balance. It was around this time that Liverpool's performances really started to suffer, and the seeds of frustration were sown.

Salah did at least accept the handshake offered by Klopp, but it was with ill grace. He did not even look at his manager as he walked off the pitch. However, the decision was proved right on that occasion, with Liverpool going on to win the game — which at that point looked like a critical three points in the title race.

Brighton vs Liverpool, November 2020

Don't worry, it's not a new thing for Salah to cut a frustrated figure. It's hardly surprising, given his constant hunger for goals and success.

Way back in November 2020, even with Liverpool winning and not long after a bout of Covid, Salah was still very upset to be withdrawn for Mané after an hour against Brighton. He threw his hands in the air when his number was shown.

And while he high-fived Mané, he did not interact with Klopp or the staff at all. He made his way directly to the stands.

“On the day that Mo Salah is fine when he leaves the pitch, then there’s something wrong," said Klopp after that match. The concern with the latest incident is that it came before coming on, not coming off.

Liverpool.com says: It might be a slightly different incident, but it's the same basic frustration. Salah will have been fuming not to start, and that probably spilled over when it took until so late for Klopp to turn to the bench.

Obviously, it's still not a good look, and it speaks to the levels of disappointment in the camp. But it's unlikely Salah or Klopp will dwell on it for very long.
