Thunderstorm warning issued by Met Office for Somerset

A bank holiday washout is being predicted today, Sunday, May 26, by the Met Office which has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Somerset and other areas of the south west and beyond. It is also predicting heavy showers and possibly even hail.

The warning came into force at 10am today and is place until 7pm this evening. The Met Office is also warning of possible travel disruption in some places.

There is a said to be a 'good chance' driving conditions will be affected by spray and standing water, leading to longer journey times by car and bus, as well as possible delays to train services. Flooding may also occur across the region and there is said to be 'small chance' of a short-term loss of power.

No warnings are currently in place for bank holiday Monday. Today's weather warning covers a large area of Devon, including Plymouth, and stretches up through Somerset and beyond and also areas of the Midlands and above.

The forecast for the south west today is sunny spells and heavy showers. It will start dry for many but showers in the west will soon develop more widely. They will turn heavy and frequent in places with hail and thunder possible, especially in eastern counties.

Some coastal regions will turn drier and sunnier but windier than yesterday. The maximum temperature will be 18°C. Scattered showers will continue this evening and overnight, but they will become mostly confined to Devon and Cornwall.

Tomorrow, Monday, May 27, scattered showers will develop and will be heavy in places but generally less numerous than today. Some places will remain dry with some warm sunshine. Showery rain will arrive in the west later. The maximum temperature will be 17°C.

The outlook for Tuesday to Thursday is staying changeable with periods of rain or showers which will be heavy at times. Some brighter intervals are predicted, especially on Wednesday and Thursday and feeling warm in the sunshine but it will be rather breezy at times.
