Tift County High duo complete commercial truck driving program

May 16—TIFTON — Two Tift County High seniors completed a unique program before graduating.

Blair Golden and Trenton Dillard completed their commercial truck driving technical certificate of credit through Southern Regional Technical College.

Mandy Ponder, Southern Regional Technical College's high school coordinator for Colquitt, Tift, Turner and Worth counties, said the dual-enrollment program was not the easiest.

"It's not for just anyone," said Ponder of the 10-week program, adding it was not the most conducive for high school schedules. Ponder said commercial truck driving was one of SRTC's top programs.

Before students can even begin the SRTC class, they have to obtain a CDL license from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Both students already know what they are going to do with their certificates.

"I plan to work with my dad," said Golden, whose father runs Golden Environmental, a waste management company in Tifton.

Dillard will be hauling equipment.

SRTC President Jim Glass said Dillard and Golden are the second and third students to finish the program.
